Yugoslavia ("Jugoslavija" in the Latin alphabet, "Југославија" in Cyrillic; English: South Slavia, or literally The Land of South Slavs) describes three political entities that existed successively on the Balkan Peninsula in Europe, during most of the 20th century. The nowadays countries that were once part of Yugoslavia (Socialist Republics) are Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. Kosovo is also partially recognized as a new country.
